ABOUT SKYSPECS

SkySpecs entered the wind energy industry in 2014 as an automated drone inspection company. After quickly earning a leading position in the United States and European markets, conducting over 23,000 onshore and offshore inspections for the biggest wind energy owners in the space, we grew our services and capabilities to offer a full-wrap operations and maintenance suite of solutions.

What this means to the industry, is that we can now present multi-layered solutions to our customers that include analytics, wind turbine blade expertise, collaborative software to manage and analyze massive amounts of data, spot trends, create plans for high-cost repair campaigns, collaborate on complex projects, and – ultimately – reduce the cost and risk within the industry, making wind energy more attainable for the world.

In the last 18 months, SkySpecs has tripled its staff, opened a new office in Amsterdam, moved to a new space in Ann Arbor, and welcomed several key players in the industry to our team. It’s been a thrilling ride, and we are poised for even more growth in the second half of 2019.

WHAT WE’RE LOOKING FOR

SkySpecs is seeking a UX Designer that will create seamless interfaces, workflows, and experiences for enterprise users in the wind energy industry. Your work will primarily be centered on Horizon, a web (and someday mobile) application that wind energy owners can use to collaborate, analyze, and act on operations and maintenance decisions. The UX designer role is a high-visibility role within the organization, and you will have the opportunity to work directly with customers to understand their needs, work with the product leadership team on product strategy, work with Sales and Marketing to build go-to-market materials and to work with the technology teams to develop amazing software.

The UX Designer will be the first hire at SkySpecs in an experience, interaction, or interface design role. The ideal candidate is not only exceptional at their craft but is also a strong communicator and would enjoy being a design evangelist within the SkySpecs engineering and product teams. We expect that you will work to tightly weave experience design into every facet of the product development process.

THE IDEAL UX DESIGNER…

  • Cares deeply about SkySpecs’ mission, our renewable energy industry users, and our users’ experience with SkySpecs’ products and services
  • Is seeking a high impact role at a rapidly growing startup
  • Thrives in uncertainty and is able to derive direction and recommendations from a soup of complicated customer workflows
  • Loves to untangle spaghetti. SkySpecs’ enterprise users have complex needs. The UX Designer will aim to satisfy those needs while keeping design simple and usable
  • Reads between the lines. The UX designer is acutely aware of the differences between what users say they want and what they need
  • Has a strong opinion on interface design and usability of digital products
  • Is a self-starter, and is comfortable creating process and procedure where none may yet exist
  • Exudes the highest level of professionalism when working with customers, while keeping it loose and fun with peers
  • Enjoys communicating with and being a contributor to product development teams

IN A GIVEN WEEK, THE UX DESIGNER WILL…

  • Design Horizon workflows and experiences that will impact the renewable energy industry in a real and tangible way. Making life easier for our users to do more with their time means making renewables more competitive, moving the world ever closer to a 100% clean and renewable grid
  • Interact with and improve the lives of the professionals that keep our global energy grid online
  • Meet with customers in person or online to discuss a feature request, conduct interviews, observe product usage, get product feedback, or present wireframes
  • Be at a whiteboard with the rest of a project team, including software engineers, product managers, and other staff, designing or re-thinking a feature or workflow
  • Work alongside developers, ensuring that engineering and design for a given feature are in alignment

THE UX DESIGNER MUST ALSO…

  • Have a BA/BS in Graphic Design, Information, Human Computer Interaction, or similar
  • Have at least 3 years of professional experience in a user interface or user experience design role working on web-based applications
  • Be full-time and based in SkySpecs’ Ann Arbor office
  • Be willing to travel periodically (no more than 10%)

PERKS YOU’LL RECEIVE

  • A flexible work schedule and work environment
  • The respect of your teammates regardless of department or skillset
  • The option of working from home when it suits you and your team
  • A fun, energetic, often entertaining workplace that is open and accepting of all interests
  • A great downtown Ann Arbor office with access to coffee, shopping, bars, restaurants, etc.
  • An open vacation policy (our policy is: Get your work done; be reliable; go above and beyond because you want to, and take rest and relaxation when you need it!).
  • Medical, dental and vision insurance
